Blow a Blade of Grass
Nothing heralds
the arrival of summer quite like a blast from a blade of grass played between the thumbs. In the hands of one kid, it's a trumpet fanfare. In the hands of another, it's more like the honk of a grandfather blowing his nose. No matter. The fun is more in the playing than the listening. With a blade of grass and a little know-how, anyone can grasp the technique.
1. First, find a nice wide blade of grass, at least 3 inches long.
2. Lick the edge of one thumb from wrist to tip and stick the blade where you licked. (It's gross, we know, but the moisture keeps the blade from falling off.)
3. Carefully press your two hands together, as if in prayer, lining up your thumbs so that they sandwich the grass at the top knuckle and at the base of your palms, with a gap in between.
4. Wiggle your thumbs until the grass bisects the center of the gap, put your lips to your thumbs, and blow through the hole.
FUN FACT
This method uses the same physics employed by modern reed instruments, such as clarinets. In each case, blown air causes a thin blade, or reed, to vibrate, creating sound.
