Park Features
Chadron State Park visitors that are naturalists will appreciate the diversity of wildlife available at the site. This park is located on several overlapping geographical ranges of bird and plant life. There are over 80 species of trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses that occur, along with over 50 species of song, shore and game birds. Dominating the scene are towering ponderosa pines that have adapted well to the Pine Ridge soils and generally dry climate. The Pine Ridge is an arch-shaped escarpment some 100 miles long and up to 20 miles wide consisting of intermingled stands of ponderosa pine and prairie. It is rugged country with broken ridges, buttes and small streams.
There are miles of hiking/nature trails that meander through the park; some short segments for a brief stroll and others rugged distances and climbs for the dedicated wilderness buff. Park goers who want to escape the hectic pace of everyday life, Chadron State Park is an ideal location. Here one can literally retreat to the leisure of a bygone age. Activities are diverse, ranging from swimming to pedaling around the park lagoon in a paddleboat. The lagoon, along with Chadron Creek offer excellent trout fishing. Guided horseback trail rides provide spectacular views of the area and visitors can savor the history of the region with demonstrations of old time fur trader activities. Try your hand at archery or take the family for a picnic.
