The Florida Keys as they used to be!
The Setting
Curry Hammock State Park protects over 1,000 acres of the Florida Keys, almost all of it in a pristine state. There are nine distinct natural communities within the park, representing a wide variety of wildlife.
The Facility
The park campground has 28 sites, many located directly along the Atlantic Ocean. There is no boat ramp in the park, and no boat containing a motor of any kind may be launched from within the park. The park’s waters are excellent for canoes and kayaks. All sites are back-in only, with water and 30 and 50-amp electric service. Each site has a standing grill and a picnic table. There is a dump station in the park. No more than eight people and two vehicles per campsite are permitted.
There is no overflow parking, all vehicles, trailers, and ‘toys’ must fit entirely within the gravel area of the campsite, lengths of which vary between 35 to 70 feet. Picnic tables are placed along the waterfront, and there is a shared firepit near the water. Pavilions in the picnic area may be reserved for a fee or used on a first-come, first-served basis.
A central bathhouse services the campground, and restrooms are available in the picnic area. The waters surrounding the park are shallow, and swimmers should be prepared to wade out until the water is deep enough to swim. No lifeguards are available.
Park Features
The park is an important stop for migrating birds in the spring and fall. An annual census of raptors is performed by HawkWatch International from September to November. Over 300 bird species have been seen within the park.
Camping Tips
The campground is nice, but to really experience Curry Hammock, you must get out in the backcountry. A 1.4-mile nature trail winds through the hardwood hammock. Ranger-led nature walks are available weekly. The waters of the park are perfect for kayaks and canoes and this is a wonderful way to explore among the mangroves. Kayak rentals are available in the park.
