A traditional family campground located in a unique maritime forest on the Chesapeake Bay.
The Setting
Located on Cape Henry in Virginia Beach at the apex of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Nestled among dune swales, Bald Cypress swamps, Broad Bay, and the Chesapeake Bay, First Landing is a unique wetlands environment. It is the site of the First Landing of the Virginia Company that went on to settle the historic Jamestown colony and was home to the Chesapeake Indians. Twisted live oaks, swaying dune grasses, and draped Spanish moss, create a unique setting for the campground, cabin areas, and full-size replica Indian village.
The Facility
222 campsites many with water and electric hook-ups for RV’s, trailers, and tents. Centrally located dump station and recycling facilities are located on-site. Each site has campfire ring, tent pad, and picnic table. Each campground area has full service restrooms with hot showers. 20 cabins with two-bedrooms accommodating up to six people. Pets welcome. Boat Launch. Group camping area. Picnic shelters, two playgrounds, and two visitor centers. 19 miles of trails. Courtyard, amphitheater, and pavilion are available for special events including weddings, family reunions, and other special events.
Park Features
Rare plants and animals including miles of Spanish moss draped Live Oaks and Bald Cypress trees. The entire maritime forest environment is globally rare and of the most unique ecosystems on the planet. Bird species such as blue heron, egret, eagles, and ospreys nest in the park each year.
Camping Tips
Firewood is available at the campstore or in honor boxes. Electronic kiosks available at the park office and trail head for up-to-date trail maps and area information. Bring your surf fishing gear, skim boards, bikes, and hiking boots in order to take advantage of all the park has to offer. Stop by the Park Office and check out a “PARK PACK” full of books, ideas, and equipment (microscopes, magnifiers, etc.) to further your exploration of the park. Visit the Virginia Beach Aquarium only 6 miles away for a close-up look at the marine life in the Bay.
