The salty tang in the air greets campers who come back year after year to this jewel of a manicured campground, where one can ramble down to the sparkling seacoast and renowned beaches of South County, toast marshmallows over a campfire, or take a quick ride for clamcakes and chowder in a quaint fishing village.
The Setting
The extremely popular Fishermen’s Memorial State Park and Campground offers campers a “seaside village” atmosphere, with flowers, neatly trimmed grass and hedges, landscaped walkways, and activities for the whole family. Close to several popular state saltwater beaches, such as Scarborough, Roger Wheeler, and Salty Brine, the campground is also just a mile from the picturesque fishing village of Galilee and the ferry to Block Island. Colonial Newport with its historic mansions and eclectic shopping and dining is just a short drive away across Narragansett Bay’s strikingly engineered bridges.
The Facility
The campground encompasses 91 acres. One section, with 40 sites, has electric, water, and sewer hookups. Another 107 campsites, with electric and sewer, are available in other sections of the campground. A separate area, with 35 sites, has no hookups, and is available for tent camping only.
Facilities include three restrooms; hot showers; fireplaces; tennis, basketball, and horseshoe courts; and a playground. Full facilities are available throughout the camping season, which runs from April 15th through October 31. An on-site farmers’ market is held weekly throughout much of the season.
Formerly called Fort Nathaniel Green after the Rhode Island-born Revolutionary War hero, the campground was renamed a number of years ago at the request of local fishermen in honor of all the fishermen in the local Narragansett area, known by some as the tuna capital of the world.
Pets (dogs and cats) are allowed in the campground, with some restrictions. Visit the www.riparks.com website for additional information regarding pets.
All visitors are urged to help stop the spread of non-native insects and diseases that can be found in firewood transported from other areas. Please do not bring firewood with you when you camp. Buy it when you reach your destination. Also, don’t take any firewood with you when you leave. Burn it all or give it to other campers at the campground. Thank you for your consideration.
