The oasis of the Grand Strand.
The Setting
Located in the heart of the Grand Strand, Myrtle
Beach State Park is one of the most popular public
beaches along the South Carolina coast. This 312
- acre oceanfront park plays a major role in preserving
and maintaining a portion of the natural heritage
of South Carolina's coastline. This traditional
state park was built by the Civilian Conservation
Corps in the 1930s and has the distinction of
being the first state park open to the public
in South Carolina. The park includes a campground,
cabins, nearly a mile of beach, picnic areas,
a fishing pier and nature center. In addition,
a nature trail provides a rare opportunity to
see one of the last stands of maritime forest
on the northern coast of South Carolina. Because
of this distinction, the forest has been declared
a Heritage Trust Site.
Myrtle Beach State Park was developed by the Civilian
Conservation Corps (CCC), a New Deal Program created
by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The program
was designed to provide employment during the
Great Depression while addressing national needs
in conservation and recreation. The CCC was instrumental
in the development of many of South Carolina's
state parks. A number of buildings built by the
CCC in the 1930's are still in use at this park.
The Facility
The campground provides individual water and electrical
hookups. Many sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet,
others up to 30 feet. There are also plenty of
sites to accommodate smaller units including tents.
All sites are convenient to hot showers, restrooms
and laundromat facilities. The campground is located
approximately 300 yards from the beach. The park
store (Trading Post) is located in the campground
and has limited grocery items, firewood, snacks
and souvenirs. Hours may vary. 302 sites have
electricity and water. The 45 - site overflow
campground is open June, July and August. Overflow
campsites are designated for tent camping and
have access to central water (no electricity).
Dump Station Available, Laundry Facilities.
