Steinaker is a good base camp to explore the attractions of Dinsoaurland. Within a short driving distance are Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, Ashley National Forest, Dinosaur National Monument, Red Fleet and Utah Field House of Natural History state parks, and the Green River.
The Setting
Fish for rainbow trout and largemouth bass, enjoy sandy beaches, swim, boat, and waterski at Steinaker Reservoir. Select a secluded campsite overlooking the water and under the skies of Dinosaurland.
The Facility
A 31-unit campground with two van and wheelchair accessible sites, modern restrooms, sewage disposal station, two group-use pavilions, sandy beaches and swim areas, boat ramp, courtesy docks and a fish cleaning station. Each campsite has a picnic table, paved parking pad, barbecue grill and fire pit.
Park Features
Juniper and sagebrush dominate Steinaker’s vegetation. Cottonwoods and aspen grow near the water. In the spring, the park blooms with wildflowers including larkspur, penstemon, Indian paintbrush, and Utah’s state flower, the sego lily. Visitors might see mule deer, jackrabbits, cottontail rabbits, porcupines, and squirrels. Common birds are magpies, robins, scrub jays, pheasants, western grebes, loons, various ducks, Canada geese, turkey vultures, osprey, and golden eagles.
Camping Tips
Sandy beaches at water temperatures reaching 70 degrees in July make for great water recreation. Steinaker Reservoir is one of Utah’s prime fisheries. Anglers will find rainbow trout, largemouth bass, and an occasional brown trout.
